Vacuum

Pressure below atmospheric, measured in inches or millimeters of mercury, used as the yardstick for refrigerant removal.

A vacuum is any pressure below the surrounding atmospheric pressure. In refrigeration work, vacuums are the yardstick for how completely a system has been emptied: as refrigerant and other gases are drawn out of a sealed circuit, the pressure inside falls below atmospheric, and the depth of that vacuum indicates how much removable vapor remains. The deeper the vacuum, the emptier the system.

Vacuum in this trade is customarily measured in units of mercury, either inches or millimeters, a convention inherited from mercury column instruments. The exam and the regulation both use these units, and questions can turn on nothing more than reading them correctly and attaching the right unit to the right requirement. A candidate should be comfortable with the idea that a vacuum specification is a target pressure below atmosphere, expressed on a mercury scale.

Conceptually, vacuum matters because atmospheric pressure is the reference point for a sealed system's honesty. A circuit resting below atmospheric pressure cannot be pushing refrigerant out into the room; whatever direction leakage would flow, it would be inward. That is why removal requirements are framed as vacuum endpoints: pulling a system into vacuum and holding it there is observable evidence that the recoverable charge is gone.
