Evacuation

Pulling an appliance down to a specified vacuum to demonstrate that its recoverable refrigerant has been removed.

Evacuation, in the Section 608 context, means reducing the pressure inside an appliance to a specified vacuum level as the endpoint of refrigerant removal. Instead of asking how much refrigerant has been captured as a fraction of the charge, evacuation asks a question a gauge can answer: has the system been pulled down to the required vacuum. Reaching the specified level demonstrates that the recoverable refrigerant has been drawn out of the circuit.

The appeal of evacuation as a standard is its observability. A percentage of remaining charge is difficult to verify at a machine in the field, because the exact quantity inside an appliance at the start of service is rarely known. A vacuum reading is right there on the gauge. For this reason the regulation expresses several of its removal requirements as vacuum levels, giving technicians an endpoint they can measure, record, and defend.

Evacuation levels differ by context, and the exam expects candidates to attach the right level to the right situation rather than to memorize a single universal number. Conceptually, deeper vacuums correspond to situations where more complete removal is demanded or achievable, and gentler vacuums to equipment where a modest pull is sufficient evidence of capture. The concept to hold is the endpoint principle: vacuum reached, requirement satisfied.
