Recycling

Cleaning recovered refrigerant with oil separation and filtration so it can be returned to service without meeting a purity standard.

Recycling is the middle step of the refrigerant handling ladder. Recovered refrigerant is passed through equipment that reduces its contaminants, typically by separating oil and running the refrigerant through filter driers that trap moisture, acid, and particulates. The refrigerant that emerges is cleaner than what came out of the appliance, but recycling makes no claim that it meets a laboratory purity specification. It is field level cleanup, performed with service equipment rather than a processing plant.

The distinction between recycling and reclamation is one of standard, not of intention. Recycled refrigerant has been improved; reclaimed refrigerant has been certified. Because recycling offers no certified purity, its role is inherently local: refrigerant cleaned this way is suited to returning to service in ways the rules permit, rather than being sold into the general market as though it were new product.

For the exam, recycling questions are almost always definition questions in disguise. Candidates are given a description of processing and asked which term it matches, or given the three terms and asked which one involves cleaning without a purity certification. Holding the ladder in mind, capture, then clean, then certify, keeps the three definitions crisp and distinct even when a question deliberately blurs them under exam pressure.
