HFC (hydrofluorocarbon)

Hydrofluorocarbons are refrigerants built from hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon with no chlorine at all. Removing the chlorine removed the ozone problem: an HFC molecule that escapes to the atmosphere carries nothing that catalytically destroys stratospheric ozone. For that reason HFCs became the dominant replacements as the chlorine bearing families were phased out, and they now fill a large share of the equipment a working technician touches.

Solving one environmental problem exposed another. Many HFCs are potent greenhouse gases, absorbing infrared radiation far more effectively than carbon dioxide does, so releases contribute to climate warming even though they leave the ozone layer alone. This is why refrigerant policy did not end with the chlorine phaseout: attention shifted to global warming potential, and the industry is again in transition toward lower impact alternatives.

For certification purposes, the essential HFC facts are conceptual. They are ozone safe but climate relevant, they are regulated and must be recovered rather than vented, and they represent the current mainstream rather than the final destination of refrigerant chemistry. A candidate who can articulate why the industry moved to HFCs and why it is now moving beyond them understands the arc the Core exam material is really describing.
